about

Here we are, pandemic still being a pandemic, everyone (at least in Melbourne) still in lock-down. So what do we do? A new hobby! I decided to try my hand at learning about coding for games (a daunting task!). Thanks to free Zoom lessons (thanks Covid!) and a bunch of Youtube I think I have started to scratch the surface of understanding. With this knowledge, I thought I would participate in a game jam! This is an event where you get a set amount of time to make a game with a particular theme.

The jam was held during PAX this year by Torrens University and Billie Blue College of Design. I had a bloody wonderful three days trying to put together my game around the theme of "isolation". What a great kick in the arse to do something with a new hobby!

The game is called Flight For Planet A. You are Earth, with solar powered rockets attached, in search of a new galaxy, as ours is now cooked. There are a bunch of galaxies in the area, each with their own particular sound. This is where the music comes in! I decided to record a solo saxophone piece for each galaxy, with the songs getting louder the closer you get to each one.

I think the way I intend for the music to be listened to is in this game. Slowly exploring, with certain songs sometimes overlapping (depending on where they spawn). You can download the game at my itch.io page.

It's only been built for Mac, but I'm sure if you've got a PC you can find a Mac emulator or something? Let me know!

I decided to release the music as an album, as I think it presents the music in a completely different light, which I also like.

If you've made it this far, thank you! I hope you enjoy! If you'd like please download the game at shaunrammers.itch.io/flight-for-planet-a
